THE MAKER
Made by hand, in the Tweed.
Each woman begins in clay. I don’t see her first; I begin creating, shaping and reshaping her, until I recognise her. It’s then that I know she has arrived in form.
The painting comes some time later. A version of the original, not identical. The lineage familiarity is there, a few generations along, perhaps, with pieces carried forward. Perhaps some of the potency is diminished, while other parts may have more deepening or colour.
It isn’t all about loss. It’s also about accessing the magic that is brought forward with us, dormant rather than gone.
Mostly, my work is a query about growth: what we give up to develop new parts of ourselves and keep in step with collective progress, and how we reach back to reclaim those valuable pieces, now that we recognise their power and the brilliantly vital part they play in womanhood.
